Checkmate at Manna on Main Street: How Chess Brought Generations Together at Lansdale — a free class in a public library room.

Checkmate at Manna on Main Street

In October 2023, something beautiful happened at Manna on Main Street in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. What started as a simple idea — what if we taught chess at a local community center? — turned into a six-week program that changed how we think about learning.

The Setup

SPARKk founder Devesh Waghmare had a vision: bring youth and seniors together through chess. Not just to teach the game, but to build connections across generations. The program ran weekly, with each session building on the last.

"The most magical moments weren't the checkmates. They were the conversations happening between moves — a teenager asking a retiree about their life, a grandmother learning from a 14-year-old about opening theory."

What We Covered

  • Chess fundamentals and notation
  • Opening principles and common systems
  • Middle-game strategy and tactics
  • Endgame technique
  • Tournament preparation and etiquette

The Impact

Over 50 participants joined across the six weeks. Some were complete beginners who'd never touched a piece. Others were experienced players looking to sharpen their skills. But everyone found something unexpected: community.

The intergenerational aspect was the real magic. Teenagers learned patience and strategic thinking from seniors who'd been playing for decades. Seniors discovered new perspectives from young minds who approached the game with fresh creativity.

What It Taught Us

This program laid the groundwork for everything SPARKk would become. It proved three things:

  1. Youth can teach. Given the space and support, young people are incredible educators.
  2. Libraries and community centers are perfect classrooms. Free, accessible, welcoming.
  3. Learning is better together. The best education happens when different perspectives collide.

Every SPARKk chapter that opens today carries a piece of what we learned at Manna on Main Street. The game might have been chess, but the lesson was much bigger.
